Gym with kids? No way.

One of the things you notice when you have a kid is that you get out of shape. At least this has been the experience for Christine and I. It's a combination of things, busy, no time, love of being with our son, love of being with each other etc etc etc.

We'd both love to work out lots more, but it's hard because it's a tradeoff, if I'm at the gym, it leaves her alone with him in the evening, when he is best wrangled by two adults. If she's at yoga, same thing. The ideal solution to all of this would be if our gym or yoga studio had childcare. My sister tells me this is a common thing in England. Many of the sites we've looked at for yoga places in other parts of North America (especially the USA and more specifically California) offer this. Why does no one do it here? Or am I just looking in the wrong places?

Well apparently Nautilus Plus does it. Now that being said the creche facilities here tend to be during the day but if you have a child who is old enough to play unsupervised (5 years and up) for an hour they will open the room for you as long as you pop in to have a look in

Also it looks like the Y does an hour of babysitting 8-9 am or 5-6 pm when you could squeeze time in at $3/hour.

And this site had a list of gyms and the first one had childcare on its list of services.

Maybe it is getting better. In fitness clubs I find things are all part of trends - so you will find yoga and pilates on the menu suddenly just as all of a sudden they will realise that perhaps Mums and Dads might not like looking like donuts but can't afford a gym membership with added child-minding fees on top of the whole thing! Who knew!
